Season of Life (Part 3)

"When you're in a new place, new environment, the unfamiliar forces you rely and depend on each other."- Relate this quote to your students as the majority of them are bused/transported into a school that is not their home school.

On page 129 Marx provides some unsettling statistics from the Children's Defense Fund. How do these statistics affect your students' well-being, behavior, psyche? What do these statistics mean for you as a teacher to these students?

End of Camp Reflection

It is extremely hard to believe that 6 weeks of camp are coming to an end! We hope that this experience has been rewarding, albeit challenging, and enriching for not only the children, but you as well.

• Please look back at your "Expectations" post. Were they met? Were they exceeded? If they were not met, what would have helped to meet them?
• Next year, there will be a new cadre of interns. If you could impart one piece of advice to them, what would it be?

Season of Life (Part 2)

Read/Review Chapters 8-14. Select one or more of the following statements to respond to/reflect upon:

• "A community. This is the only place probably in  your whole life where you're gonna be together and work together with a group as diverse as this-- racially, socially, economically, you name it. It's a beautiful thing to be together like this. You'll never find anything else like it in the world-- simply won't happen. So enjoy it. Make the most of this. It's yours." Do your students feel this way at your site? At their home school? In their neighborhood?
• "And the way we measure greatness is the impact you make on other people's lives."
• "The question isn't really how many talents you've been given. That's the sovereignty of God. The real question is what you do with the ones you have."
• "In the end, it's not the mistakes you make that really matter. It's what you do with what you learn from those mistakes. And it's also how you respond to the mistakes of others." What mistakes have you made this summer? What did you learn from the mistake? What did you DO with that learning? How do you respond if one of your students makes a mistake?
• "We look at the guy, the color of his skin, we put him in a box. Look at his body type, put him in a box..." What boxes do we put our students in? What boxes do they put us in?
• Empathy is "the single greatest trait of humanity that separates us from the other animals."- How do you teach empathy?

Season of Life (Part I)

Read/Review Chapters 1-7. Select one or more of the following statements to respond to/reflect upon:

• "This is one of the greatest experiences of your young lives. So let's make sure you're having fun, all right?"
• "What is our job as coaches? To love us. What is your job? To love each other"
• "I was an outgoing, polite little kids who never really wanted anything beyond their attention and acceptance, and even though a good number of them seemed almost superhuman to me, they still made me feel comfortable in their world."

DAVEED of PORT DISCOVERY... activity: "The Life Cycle of a Butterfly"

In class my version of "Math Mingle" working in pairs and groups in a 4 minutes to solve math problems.  When time runs out we do 1 of 2 things.... We stand and rotate partners like in speed dating and work on more math or 1 person from each group scribes on the board to show the work and answer.


 

Jumping rope after lunch during down time before enrichment.   We used 3 ropes for 18 children but I did not give them any direction.   My 4th graders took it upon themselves to form groups to take turns sharing that rope... some even had contest with other groups.
