Expectations

Good Morning!

In a few hours we will all get together to learn about the most phenomenal summer experience ever! Take a moment and think about what you hope to get out of this summer. Please share out with the group.

  1. I hope to not face my phobia of water (e.g. sailing, swimming) this summer. Beyond that I am looking forward the rest of it. I'm very familiar with the enrichment that SKC offers since my son went there.

    1. I too, am afraid of water. I faced my fears during a Paddle and Scoop. You will always have on a vest. Good luck!

  2. It is my hope that I will gain a wealth of new teaching experiences during this camp. I am always looking for new ways to enhance my pedagogy. I participated in a summer enrichment program similar to this last summer in my hometown (Salisbury, MD). It was called Horizons. I made some good relationships there, but the overall experience was not the best. I saw a lot of things that could have been done differently and worked more efficiently had the camp been more organized. Although there were some negatives to that work experience, I turned them into positives by thinking about ways I would change it if I had the chance to do it again. Looking ahead to these next several weeks, I hope to have a better experience with SuperKids Camp and really enjoy everything that Baltimore has to offer.

  3. I haven't been a camp counselor since my teen age years, so I'm excited to see the differences between what I took away from that expierence and what I will take away from this one. I also want to figure out if a classroom setting is the way I would like to make a impact on children's lives. I'm struggling between choosing a career in Education or Social Work so this expierence will definitely assist with my final decision.

  7. I am very excited to be a part of such a great program and to have such a profound impact on the children in our own city! I hope to gain more hands-on experience in the classroom and learn from the campers as well. I'm also excited to be able to explore Baltimore during our enrichment field trips. I love the emphasis on reading, since it is such an integral part of school success. I hope this experience will help me become a better educator and prepare me for my future work in reading education and speech pathology.

  9. Although I am not an Education major, helping others has always been one of my passions. That is part of the reason that I am a nursing major, in hopes to be an NICU nurse. With working at SKC I honestly just want to help these kids in any way I can. In addition to helping with the kids and bonding with them, I look forward to maturing bonds with all the SKC staff. After meeting everyone at the trainings this week I am more than excited to get to work with this group of people and to gain knowledge from each and every one of them. I know that this opportunity will help me to grow as a person and help me get out of my shell even more.

    1. That's great! Being a NICU nurse will still have you in touch with youth (as soon as they are born!) My son was in NICU for 2 weeks and he is the most energetic, zany boy ever! I am thankful of the care they took of him EVERY DAY! So thank you in advance for the joy that you will bring to parents!

  10. I am an environmental science major who suddenly decided he wanted to be a teacher. But I have no experience as a teacher. WHAT DO I DO?!?! Sign up for SuperKids of course! I need to see if teaching is for me and there is no better way than this! This summer I hope to learn a lot about teaching and figure out what it takes to be successful. After setting up my classroom today, I know this will be a great summer.

  11. I really hope to get hands on classroom experience this summer through the Super Kids summer camp. I am excited to teach in my own classrooms and have a chance to explore the city of Baltimore with a group of kids. I really hope to make great friends this summer as well as have a chance to impact the life of at least one student I interact with. I hope to have an experience of a lifetime this summer!

  12. I am excited to teach in my own classroom. I hope that I will grow as both a person and an educator, and learn as much as I teach. The enrichment activities seem really fun and educational, so I am looking forward to seeing parts of the city that I haven't seen before (even though I'm from here!). The people I have met so far have been really great and I hope to continue to build lasting relationships them.

  13. By working with SuperKids this summer, I hoping to gain more hands-on experience with having control of my own classroom of students. I'm excited about discovering and using my own teaching techniques, while maintaining the balance between adding my own flare and sticking to a given curriculum. I am also looking forward to all of the intern experiences outside of the classrooms (i.e. the Orioles game, the dinners, the speakers, living at Loyola). I can already this summer will be one to remember.

  14. I am really excited to meet my kids tomorrow! Being an international studies, I don't have any experience in a real classroom so I am very excited for this opportunity! I hope that I will be able to really connect with my students and together we will be able to create lasting memories. I am also really excited to apply the things we have learned in training. Even after one week, I feel like it is going to be a great summer!

  15. I am hoping to gain more experience this summer working with children in the age group that i want to teach. I am trying to stay open minded so that not only can i teach them, but they can teach me. I'm looking forward to the enrichment activities, i think i'm just as exited as the campers. I know that children are unpredictable, but i'm hoping by just interacting with them i can gain more knowledge about them.

  16. I was matched with the SuperKids Camp Internship program through an existing internship at my school, the Shepherd Internship Program (aka SIP). This internship is run through the Shepherd Program for the Interdisciplinary Study of Poverty and Human Capability, of which I am currently pursuing a minor. In addition to my Poverty Studies minor, I am also working towards a major in Economics and a minor in Educational Policy.

Many classes I have taken so far in my college career have drawn me to have a passion for increasing the welfare for individuals, as well as our country as a whole both economically and socially, by using education. The belief I have that education can have such a significant impact on the strength of our country led me to want to study and work in an educational field, hopefully in research and policy.

Thus when it came time for me to choose an agency through my school, SuperKids stood out to me due to its desire to have young interns in the classroom (yes with mentors) with freedom and flexibility. These two factors seem to be constantly smothered in our modern day public school system, with – in my opinion – minimal success.

Over my six weeks at SuperKids I hope to gain valuable classroom experience as well as connect on a personal level with children to learn what roadblocks they face in receiving their education. I have read a variety of proposed reforms to our education system that sound too good to be true on paper. By being in a classroom I hope to continue my hands-on education about education, which will allow me to better critic the current literature as well as further my own opinions about what the next steps are for our education system.

    1. Such a well thought out answer Maggie! You will gain very valuable classroom experience. Network and talk with experienced staff and your mentor. Their advice is just as invaluable!
